Detective Rob Magao has over 15 years experience as a police officer (13 years on SWAT) and has worked in patrol, street crimes and the detective division. Detective Magao is currently assigned to a Hartford County S.W.A.T. team and Vice/Narcotics Unit. Det. Magao also assists in organizing the Connecticut SWAT Challenge and is responsible for developing the physical fitness challenge, the flagship event of the CT SWAT Challenge. He has also competed in the World SWAT Challenge in Little Rock Arkansas. Detective Magao is a first degree black belt in the L.O.C.K.U.P.® Police Combat System and is a lead instructor in the L.O.C.K.U.P.® System. He also holds instructor certifications in handcuffing, baton, Soulis Shooting CQ firearms certification, dignitary protection, crossfit and simunitions – force on force. Detective Magao has trained thousands of police officers in L.O.C.K.U.P.® Police Combat and Police ground fighting courses both domestically and internationally.

Detective Magao was selected by Lt. Dillon as the lead instructor and developer for the ground fighting component of the L.O.C.K.U.P.® Police Combat System. Presently courses are offered in three or five day formats. The ground fighting techniques and philosophies are specifically designed for the needs of the law enforcement officer in a ground fighting situation and not for a grappling match. Detective Magao frequently competes in grappling competitions as well as adventure races and triathlons.

Detective Magao has over 20 years of martial arts experience and holds the rank of black belt in Gracie jiu jitsu under legendary 8th degree red/black belt Master Pedro Sauer. Detective Magao also holds a 2nd degree black belt in  Nihon Jujutsu (US Judo Association) and 2nd degree black belt in Goju Ryu Karate.   

Detective Magao owns and operates the Bushido Jiu-jitsu Academy ( and CrossFit Thin Blue Line in Manchester, CT.
